In this post, you get to meet the antagonist of Panama Deception, Ed DuBois. He’s also the one who poses a great, hidden threat.

1.  What are your basic statistics?

My stats, huh? And why should I give those? I live more in the shadows than anything else, and the last thing I want is my mug spread all over the world. Okay, okay. My name’s Edward Roman DuBois, known as Ed to everyone. I’m not the tallest guy in the world, all right? Five-ten to be exact. I’m an only child, thank God. At least no one else had to grow up with their old man beating on them. Oh, and my old man’s dead. Drank himself to death out in the bayou somewhere. Mama has a house now in the town of Bayou, Louisiana.

Yeah, I’m Cajun. That ain’t such a bad thing. You want to know more of my stats? Okay. I’m five ten. Not tall, but I’m built with not a drop of fat on me. My eyes are gray, my hair’s gone gray, but don’t you dare call me an old man. You see, some young punks did that one time when they tried to mug me in New Orleans. I know what they say. Give them what they want. No way could I do that, not when I had my CIA cred pack on me. Then one of them had the audacity to call me Old Man. Let’s just say they wound up in the hospital with some broken bones and leave it at that.

2.  What are your likes and dislikes?

I’m game for any kind of food, from crawfish all the way to some weird foods you get in any culture. Cheetos are my junk food of choice, especially when I’m on an op. So far as dislikes? Oh, I don’t like whiners. I dislike DC too. Living there for me is like living in jail, which is why I like to be in the field all of the time.

3.  What is most precious to you and why?

What is most precious to me resides not with me but on the left ring finger of Francesca. You see, she’s the only woman I’ve ever loved since high school. I gave her a sapphire commitment ring last spring. Why not marry her? She doesn’t want to get married again, not after her whopper of a divorce. I’m good with that. I pretty much figured I’m a permanent bachelor, so the commitment ring shows her how much I care for her and that she’s the only one for me regardless of not having a piece of paper to show it.

4.  Who has impacted you the most and why?

Oh, that’s easy. The jerk who fingered me in Iraq for taking it too far with eight guys. Yeah, so what if they died? I was doing my job. They were the enemy, and I had to get information and get it quickly. Well, he’s paid his dues, and I have a little side job to help me even the score with the rest of the CIA punks who thought they could get ahead of me at my expense.

5.  If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?

Tough. Enough said on that.

6.  What is your greatest strength and weakness?

I’m a hard worker. Have been ever since I was in college and had to work to earn my keep when living with my guardian. I drive my guys (and sometimes girls) hard when we’re planning our missions. I think through everything. And I mean everything. Every possible situation, contingency. And that’s what gets me and my boys safely home at the end of the day.

Weaknesses, huh? I absolutely hate having my authority questioned in front of my guys. You have a problem with me, you come to me privately. And some say that driving people to hard is a weakness. I say it keeps them alive at the end of the day.

7.  What’s your biggest regret?

I’m not sure I have any. A regret might have been being stuck in DC, but that’s where I met Francesca. And it’s not taking it too far in Iraq, which is what sent me into exile in DC. I was doing my job there, got it?

8.  What drives you?

Making things right in my eyes. That’s why I do what I do for the CIA. And my little side job? Evening the score with the CIA lines my pockets with a hefty retirement fund.

9.  What do you want the most? What do you fear the most?

Me? What do I want the most? I want to be acknowledged that the sacrifices I made in Afghanistan and Iraq were worth the effort. What did I get? Not that. No, I watched others get their rising star while I sat on the sidelines. And what do I fear? Francesca has become my rock. I fear losing her most, or at least her love.

10.  What are three things you want people to learn from Panama Deception?

Sometimes you have to play dirty to get the job done. Keep your eyes on all angles of the situation lest someone get the drop on you. Trusting me might be dangerous. You think I’m wrong on that? Oh, well. You’re entitled to your opinion, and I’m entitled to mine.

Wow, Jen, what a nasty, self-serving turncoat. Tricky mind, that guy. Hope the protag has a bead on him. It will get ugly, fast. Great character profile! LOL
