The next three posts will be interviews with the three main characters of Hunter Hunted so that you can learn more about them.  These interviews are in their voices, not mine.  This is crucial for making three-dimensional characters.  Enjoy!

The first interview is with Jenna Knight, the leading lady of the novel and protagonist.

1. What are your basic statistics?

Oh?  Like what I look like?  My name?  I’m sorry.  I have to laugh because I realize that people use words when reading to visualize characters.  My name is Jenna Knight, and I grew up as a preacher’s kid in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Daddy died when, I was ten, and we moved to Edenton, North Carolina, which is along the coast.  I’m five feet, two inches tall and weigh 115 pounds soaking wet.  Yes, I don’t mind revealing my weight.  My hair is a long, dark brown, a far cry from what it was growing up.  My eyes are naturally a hazel, but I wear green contacts to keep up my persona as Jenna Knight.

2.  What are your likes and dislikes?

In terms of music, I like just about everything save for rap and heavy metal, but my favorite has to be jazz.  I like the way the notes seem to wrap around you.  And food?  Pretty much anything save for Chinese.  I also like cats.  I’ve got two of them, both pure black with emerald eyes.  My boy is named Sniper, and my girl is named Jewel.  They’re like my children to me.

I dislike men who are chauvinistic.  Most importantly, I severely dislike General Raul Avila.  He’s the defense minister in Guatemala.  No, forget dislike.  I hate him for what he did to my family.

3.  What is most precious to you?

At my house, I have a trunk, and in that trunk, I keep a memory box, a locket, a woman’s hat, and a minister’s stole.  Those are the items that are precious to me.  Why?  You’ll have to read Hunter Hunted to find out.

4.  Who has impacted you the most?

You mean anyone?  Even if they aren’t famous?  I could say Avila since he’s the whole reason why I am who I am.  But beyond that, perhaps Eric Smith.  We dated when I was Emily, and once I became Jenna, he’s the one who trained me.  We also dated then, but I found him to be a distraction and turned down his marriage proposal.  I know I hurt him.  A lot.

5.  If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?

Oh, that’s easy.  Misunderstood.

6.  What is your greatest strength and weakness?

My strength is my steadiness and focus.  Okay, I know that’s two, but they can fit hand in hand together.  I need to have steadiness to do what I do both as a goldsmith and an assassin.  I need focus too because making jewelry requires time to get all of the details right.  And being an assassin requires focus to carefully plan and carry out my assignments.

Honestly, I don’t like to think about my weaknesses.  Truly, I don’t.  But, truth be told, I’d have to say it’s my focus.  Surprised you, didn’t I?  Sometimes too much of a strength can turn to a weakness.  I just know that I’ve destroyed people’s lives because I’m so focused on avenging Daddy’s death.

7.  What’s your biggest regret?

You do know how to ask the toughest questions.  That’s a hard one.  I regret this life I lead.  Not the goldsmith part.  I love that part.  No, the assassin part.  Sure, you think I can simply walk away from this.  It’s not that easy.  I’m under contract with Sugar, and until my bullet finds its mark in Avila’s heart, I’m committed to him.  And I will see this to completion no matter what.

8.  What drives you?

That’s a good question.  Honestly, I feel like I’m being interviewed on a talk show.  I’m sorry.  Let me get back to the question.  What drives me is easy.  I want Avila to pay for what he did.  Everything I’ve done.  Everything you’ve read about in the excerpt is true.  I gave up my life as Emily Barstow to bring justice.  So, yes, I want justice.  Is that such a crime?

9.  What do you want the most?  What do you fear the most?

What I want the most is easy.  I don’t want to be so lonely.  I want a true friend, one who will understand me.  I’d like to have a husband and children one day as well.  Eric’s not either of those, nor will he ever be.

And my fear?  I’m scared of losing my humanity.  Don’t think that my first kill didn’t make me sick.  It did.  For weeks, even.  Each one I’ve made has impacted me and taken a little of my soul.  If I don’t get my shot at Avila soon, I worry that I’ll have no humanity left.  I’m sorry for crying, but that’s what scares me the most.

10.  What are three things you want people to learn from Hunter Hunted?

What can I say without giving too much away?  If you read Hunter Hunted, you’ll learn about how much I struggle with loneliness.  You’ll also see how I have a scary focus, one that has a tendency to shut out others.  Finally, you’ll see the impact of the choices I’ve made in my life.
