National Basenji Mischief Day was last Friday. Okay, so it’s not a holiday like Labor Day, the Fourth of July, or even National Ice Cream Day. But it’s a holiday that I celebrate, nonetheless. With a 10,000-year history, Basenjis are quirky, independent thinkers. As pets, they can make us laugh, make us cry, even encourage us.

In essence, Basenjis have the loyalty of a dog but the independence of a cat. As cats trapped in dogs’ bodies, they’re a reflection of the humor of God, who created them.

Bonnie and Clyde, our Basenjis for going on four years now, especially provide that. They’re special for five main reasons.

1. They know when I need emotional comfort. When I went through my really hard time this past summer, both dogs, but especially Clyde, knew when I needed comfort. I’d be sitting on the couch at night, and Clyde would jump up beside me. He got as close to me as he could, as if he sensed my distress and wanted to comfort me.
2. They make me laugh. As I mentioned, Basenjis are quirky dogs and do have a sense of humor. Clyde has a tendency to hop up and crawl onto the tops of chairs, the couch, pillows, etc., just like a cat. One time when Steve was out of town, he even sat on top of my head.
3. They’re protectors but know friends when they see them. Basenjis may weigh a smidge over twenty pounds, but they can be quite the protector. Bonnie is one who loves to guard the house. If someone unknown comes to the door, she’s right there to greet them with a protective growl, as if to say, “Who do you think you are to come to our door?” Unless you’re the Amazon guy. She now has an Amazon Guy whine since good things (like Charlee Bear dog treats) come from him. And when she sees we know someone, she’ll treat them as a friend.
4. They’re good companions. In late October, we took the pups down to the beach for a test run. They traveled well. Then, weekend before last, we got even more adventurous and took them on an overnighter to the same beach. It was nice to curl up in the hotel room with Clyde beside me.
5. They give love freely. Remember how I mentioned Basenjis are like cats? One of those quirks is that when they snuggle next to you, you know it’s their choice. Bonnie and Clyde will switch off at night when I’m hanging out on the couch. One of them will lie down beside me. Then when I stroke their head, they tend to snuggle closer as if to say, “Mom, I’m glad you’re here.”

Basenjis are unique dogs, and ours aren’t any different. But they’re loving animals and freely give of their affection when they so desire. In many ways, I want to be like them. I want to show affection to others, to live life to the fullest. And yes, to be just a little bit quirky.
